Organizing the Chart

Determining how best to present the boxes in your chart is controlled by two options - Branch Styles and Sub-Charting.  Using a combination of branch styles and sub-charting, you can utilize the available space in the manner most appropriate to your chart.

Changing the Branch Style

In the Workspace Toolbar, click the Branch Style button to select a branch style to apply to the chart.  The options here will determine how boxes display in relation to each other.  For example, choosing 'Wide' will always place the subordinates of a manager in a straight line, centered under that manager.

Sub-Charts

Sub-charting helps you partition your chart by levels, a field (example: department or location), or by selecting one or more manager's boxes and inserting a sub-chart.  This gives you more flexibility and allows you to preview your sub-charting before you publish your org chart.

In the Chart Toolbar, click the Sub-Chart button to select how many boxes are seen at a given time.

You can use the Every __ Levels option to 'break' your chart at a specific number of levels.  For example, if you choose two (2), then you will always see a maximum of two levels when viewing your chart.  An example of this would be seeing the CEO and everyone that reports to her.  Another example would be selecting a manager, and seeing only that manager and his subordinates.

If you select the Using Field option, the chart will 'break' on a box with subordinates who don't have the same entry for that field.  For example, if you choose Office Location as your sub-charting field, the application will display all branches in which the employees have the same Office Location entry.  If an employee has a different Office Location than her manager and also has subordinates, then that employee's box will have a sub-chart break, indicated by a down arrow .

The Insert Sub-Chart Break button allows you to select a box that has subordinates and 'break' the chart at that level.  This will effectively hide all of the subordinates for that box and re-draw the chart to better utilize the space available.
